Journalist input

As a journalist

First and foremost, we need to protect journalistic independence. This means standing firm against any external pressures, be it from governments, corporations, or political interests. Journalism is about truth, transparency, and accountability. That means sustainable business models are also critical for the future of journalism. Relying on one source of income, like advertising, can compromise editorial integrity. Instead, we need diverse revenue streams and public service media that ensure fair pay for journalists and a strong, independent workforce.
Transparency is key here too. Media organisations must be upfront about their funding and editorial decisions to maintain public trust. Investing in quality journalism, especially investigative work, is non-negotiable. In-depth reporting uncovers hidden truths, holds power to account and gives a voice to those who don’t have one. Inclusivity and diversity in journalism are also fundamental. We need to make sure the stories of marginalised communities are heard and represented.
Instead of competing against each other, independent media outlets should collaborate, sharing resources and expertise to amplify our collective impact. Ethical standards should be the backbone of everything we do, focusing on honesty, accuracy, and impartiality, not sensationalism. Finally, press freedom needs legal protection to ensure that journalists can do their work without fear of censorship or retaliation. Only then can we truly hold power to account.
