Online roundtable – NO DEMOCRACY WITHOUT JOURNALISM

Independent journalism is a cornerstone of any democratic society. Yet today, its survival is under threat due to increasing polarisation, disinformation, precarious working conditions, and attacks on press freedom across Europe.

As part of the European S-INFO project, which operates in Italy, Belgium, Romania, and Malta, the campaign “No Democracy Without Journalism” was launched to support and protect independent and investigative journalism by building stronger alliances with civil society and activists. This campaign is now entering a new phase of collective reflection and participatory discussion.

We invite you to join our online round table on 26 May at 17:30 (CET). This will be an opportunity to present the first outcomes of the “No Democracy Without Journalism” campaign, including key insights from our meeting with academic researchers and media scholars. These discussions highlighted both the structural challenges facing journalists and the urgent need to redefine the social and political role of journalism in Europe.

During the event, we will also present the first draft of the “Manifesto for Sustainable Journalism”. This document is envisioned as a political and cultural tool to outline new perspectives for independent journalism and the right to information. The round table will be a participatory space, where activists, journalists, and citizens can contribute to shaping the final version of the Manifesto, which will be officially launched during the Sherwood Festival in Padua on 30 June.

This event will be held entirely online. The registration link is available here: https://forms.gle/V8x45WB7oGUkzmY6A
