On Monday, May 12th, at 9 AM, the ISFSC (Institut Supérieur de Formation Sociale et de Communication) in Brussels will host the seminar “Les défis du journalisme contemporain”, organized by S-Com as part of the campaign No Democracy Without Journalism.
In an era marked by growing polarization, algorithm-driven disinformation, and increasing threats to editorial independence, this event will offer a space for reflection on the complex challenges faced by independent and investigative journalism today.
The seminar will bring together several media professionals active in Belgium. Speakers will include Julie Nicosia (independent journalist, professor at ISFSC), Louis Van Ginneken (journalist at Médor), Pierre Jassogne (Alter Échos), Michael Karafilakis (founder of DEMOS media), and Frédéric Loore (IHECS, investigative journalist and S-INFO mentor).
Together, they will explore two key questions: how can independent journalism combat disinformation and algorithmic amplification without compromising freedom of expression? And how can it maintain credibility while participating more actively in urgent social transformations?
This seminar is the last one in a series of four university events held across S-INFO partner countries—Italy, Belgium, Malta, and Romania. These meetings aim to foster transnational dialogue and contribute to the collective drafting of the Manifesto for Sustainable Information, to be presented in June.
Through these events, the S-INFO project seeks to raise awareness among students, researchers, and the broader public about the vital role of free, independent journalism in protecting democratic values and promoting an informed, engaged society.
