On Thursday, March 20th, at 5 PM., the S-Info project will organize at the Padoan Lecture Hall of Ca’ Foscari University of Venice the event “No democracy without journalism – the role of journalism in today’s world“, an in-depth meeting on the role of journalism in an era marked by profound political and technological changes, characterized by an increasing tension between the demands for freedom of expression and the manipulation of information in complex global contexts.
The event, organized in collaboration with the university collectives LiSC – Liberi Saperi Critici (Venice) and Spina (Padua), will feature:
- Sara Manisera, member of fada collective, journalist, author and independent documentary filmmaker. She has worked extensively in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, North Africa and Italy, covering environmental conflicts, gender issues and food supply chains.
- Francesco Vacchiano, a researcher at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice. He has been interested in issues at the intersection of anthropology and psychology for many years. He has worked extensively on medical and psychological anthropology, transnational migration, borders, bureaucracies and the politics of citizenship.
The event is the first in a series of four meetings to be held in universities in the project partner countries. After the meeting in Italy, discussions in Belgium, Malta and Romania will follow. These meetings will provide a space for transnational discussion to address common challenges in contemporary journalism and lay the groundwork for the shared drafting of a policy document, the “Manifesto for Sustainable Journalism.”
Through this campaign, the S-Info project aims to raise awareness among students, researchers and citizens about the value of journalism as an essential pillar of democracy, emphasizing the urgency of an information model that resists economic and political pressures by fostering free, critical and accessible information.
