Presentation of the S-Info project
Sunday, March 16th, 7 PM
DB180 Space, c.so Garibaldi 180 – Perugia
Could independent journalism really contribute effectively to the fight against gender discrimination? What are the most useful tools to counter patriarchal dynamics within the field? And how can we make newsrooms and information venues more inclusive and safe for all? These questions will be discussed with the activists and journalists attending the conference.
Independent journalism has always played a crucial role in defending rights and promoting social justice. In this scenario, the European project S-INFO has provided an important opportunity to reflect on the relationship between information, activism and gender issues.
Through the creation of Safer Spaces in four European countries (Italy, Belgium, Romania and Malta), the project has highlighted the deep gender inequalities and patriarchal dynamics still entrenched in the world of journalism and, more generally, in working contexts.
Speakers:
- Federica Toninello, co-project manager of S-INFO, introduces the context of the project and the model of cooperation between independent journalism and activism. She stresses the importance of gender as a central element of the project’s focus on social rights, highlighting the challenges faced and the opportunities for change that have emerged.
- Valentina Zoccali explains the contribution of S Com within the Safer Spaces implemented in the S-INFO project and the link with the Genre Medias project. She analyzes the strategies adopted to make these spaces truly safe and accessible, as well as the role of the media in building a more equitable and respectful discourse of diversity.
- Elle Biscarini, journalist, videomaker and podcaster at Umbria24, Umbria’s first online newspaper, talks about how gender issues are reported in local journalism, particularly online journalism, with concrete examples. Part of the talk will focus on ethics issues and the new Testo Unico, effective June 2025, which incorporates and makes explicit gender issues and how they should be handled by registered journalists and journalists.
